My Journey to Plant Based PhD

I'm Dr. Ryan Gamble, the founder and driving force behind Plant Based PhD. With an academic and professional background that uniquely blends performing arts health with evidence-based nutrition, I am deeply committed to guiding individuals towards enhanced wellness through plant-based living.

 

My Educational Journey and Expertise:

  • Undergraduate Studies: I began my academic journey as a music student, aspiring to be an operatic singer, and successfully completed a Bachelor of Music degree. 

  • Masters in Music Performance and Pedagogy: As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Penn State University, I expanded my expertise b earning a Master of Music in Performance and Pedagogy. My master's research thesis explored meditation and yoga as tools for reducing music performance anxiety, marking my initial foray into wellness and performance optimization.

  • Dual Doctorates: My quest for knowledge led me to the University of North Texas, where I pursued and completed two doctorates simultaneously while serving as a Graduate Teaching Fellow. The first, a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), is the terminal degree in classical music performance. The second, a Ph.D. in Performing Arts Health, allowed me to delve into scientific research, igniting my passion for evidence-based wellness.

Transition to Nutrition Science:

  • A Paradigm Shift: During my doctoral studies, my fascination with the scientific method and a desire to make impactful contributions to health and wellness steered me towards nutrition science. This shift was further influenced by my personal experiences and transformations following a whole food plant-based diet.

  • Diet Transition: Alongside my wife, a family nurse practitioner and certified delegate of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, I adopted a whole food plant-based diet. This lifestyle change was influenced by extensive research and reading influential works on nutrition science. In the months and years that followed our transition to a whole food plant based diet, we have enjoyed sustained and significant improvements in energy, wellness, and mental clarity.

  • Ph.D. Dissertation: My doctoral research culminated in an epidemiological study focusing on dietary patterns among collegiate music students and their health outcomes. This extensive project involved reviewing over 1,000 scientific papers, further solidifying my position that the best available evidence in the field of nutrition science undoubtedly supports the promotion of a diet that is composed mostly of whole food plant based ingredients.

Drawing from extensive research and personal experience, I advocate for the profound health benefits of a whole food plant-based diet.
